Curtains Make More Energy Efficient Homes

As the days get shorter and the weather gets colder, it's tempting just to turn on the heating and snuggle up on the sofa. There's something satisfying about watching the rain pelt down a window from the cosy safety of a seat by the fire. But before getting too comfortable, spare a thought for how much that window could be costing.

(PRWEB) October 24, 2007 -- According to the Energy Saving Trust, 20% of all heat loss in the home is caused by poor ventilation and draughts, particularly around the windows. And when considering in the average house, windows make up 15% of the total surface area, that's an awful lot of heat to be escaping. Sitting in a draught doesn't just cause a pain in the neck, it exacts a heavy toll on both the purse strings and the environment. So, with that in mind, soft furnishings specialists Plumbs have put together this handy guide to help wrapping up windows this winter.

Although it might seem like an obvious one, the first thing to do is give all the windows a good once over. Check for storm damage, cracks and damaged weather sealing. Try and feel for any draughts so locate where the vulnerable spots are.

Install draught proofing around all windows and doors. Available from most DIY stores in a variety of different materials, this is one of the simplest ways to reduce heat loss in a home.

Fit good quality, lined curtains to your windows. Research has shown that even uninsulated curtains reduce heat loss by 30% and when thermal linings are also fitted, this figure rises to 50%. Plumbs specialise in made-to-measure curtains and window dressings that ensure the perfect fit to a window.

Maximise solar warmth by trimming any trees or bushes that prevent light from entering windows. Deciduous trees will drop their leaves but evergreens may block the low winter sun.

Open curtains during the daytime to allow sunlight to warm the inside but make sure they're closed again at dusk to prevent the heat from escaping. Bear in mind that the energy from south facing windows will be stronger than from other directions. By following these simple steps, you can greatly reduce both energy bills and a home's carbon footprint.

The Plumbs family are experts in made-to-measure curtain design and offer a whole range of different curtain fabrics and window dressing solutions. Plumbs will do all the hard work involved in getting the perfect style, colour and fabrics. They will advise, measure, fit and dress windows completely free of charge, erasing any hassle of updating or replacing window dressings.
