New For Dummies SAT Board Game Boasts it is Better than Study Guides

A new board game by the wildly popular For Dummies brand offers a more complete solution to SAT study and test success. Implementing conditions that experts agree increase study success: group study, fun and games, SAT Game For Dummies revolutionizes SAT test prep. Retail buyers at Toy Fair '08 in Manhattan were excited to discover the new product offering.
When we first came up with the idea almost five years ago

Hoboken, NJ (PRWEB) March 19, 2008 -- BE Innovative Group Inc. (BIG Inc.) and Wiley Publishing, creators of the wildly popular For Dummies® brand recently launched their new SAT board game at Toy Fair '08 in Manhattan. After years of the study guide as product mainstay, retail buyers at this event were enthusiastic to find a game. The response at Toy Fair was so great in fact, that the company sold out of available show samples. "We literally had to turn people away and promise to ship them [a game" says Elsbeth Vaino, BIG Inc. CEO, "the response was incredible".

The new SAT Game For Dummies is a step up from the age-old study guide for a host of reasons. Characteristics intrinsic to a board game make it a natural fit as a study tool. Games are fun, meaning teenagers will study longer. When you play a game players learn tips and tricks from one another. Game play creates an event around learning, which studies show increases recall. Trivia-style questions are timed which gets players accustomed to the test pace. Also, playing a board game raises excitement, likening it to the stress of the test taking environment.

Further, by the whole family sitting down to a game, parents take an active role in their child's pre-college planning, something College Board research indicates teens want. In doing so, parents quickly see how prepared their child is for the test. This is not easily done with a study guide.

Besides the obvious benefits to the high school senior, the SAT board game also holds appeal for younger siblings. Because these younger family members are in the prime board game user demographic and they are also starting to prepare for the SAT earlier, parents in these many American households more than double their value with a game.

The notion of an SAT board game is meeting with approval from education professionals as well. In the wake of the No Child Left Behind act, schools are being held increasingly accountable for reaching academic achievement standards. As such, a product that can be used in the classroom and for multiple kids is a welcome offering.

In his book, Making the Most out of College, Harvard Professor Richard Light discusses the effectiveness of group study in learning. Academic Institutions such as The University of Minnesota Centre for Teaching and Learning Services have contended that games are highly effective learning tools. Dr. June Feder, a psychologist with the United Federation of Teacher's Peer Intervention Program asserts that parental involvement enriches learning and another recent article by The College Board states that "Effective study groups involve hashing out lesson materials together--explaining concepts, arguing about them, figuring out why one person's answer differs from another's--and in the process, you learn more than you ever would have studying by yourself."

From the very beginning, BIG Inc. founders thought combining a board game with an SAT study tool was a natural fit. "When we first came up with the idea almost five years ago", says Vaino, "we were sure there would already be [SAT board games on the market. We were amazed that we couldn't find any." This was especially surprising to the company because playing board game combines conditions experts agree increase learning success: group study, games and fun.
