New Braunfels, TX (PRWEB) February 6, 2008 -- David Harrison, 59, is a sweetheart with a sweet tooth" say his friends at the Eden Home long-term care facility. Mr. Harrison wore out a borrowed power wheelchair from delivering mail at the facility where the staff members keep bowls of chocolate on hand for the self-professed chocoholic." To keep him on the go, The SCOOTER Store has donated a new power wheelchair to him.

Today, three executives from The SCOOTER Store – Rodger Mack, EVP of Operations, Dan Gibbens, EVP of Marketing and Mary Armbruster, Gift of Mobility Administrator - delivered the power wheelchair to David Harrison. We wanted to help this man who is doing so much to help others," says Doug Harrison, CEO and Founder of The SCOOTER Store. Doug Harrison (no relations) noted that the power chair was donated from The SCOOTER Stores Gift of Mobility program, which donates power mobility equipment to individuals who do not have the resources or insurance coverage to pay for it.

Ten years ago, while driving home after closing his restaurant for the night, David Harrisons car crashed, leaving him with multiple fractures and permanent brain damage. It was a life altering event for the active husband and father of two who has resided in a long-term nursing facility since the accident.

After years spent in the hospitality business, Mr. Harrison loves being around people and being constantly on the go," says Betty Doeppenschmidt, of Eden Home, who notes that having a chair allows him to feel valuable again." The Texas Association of Homes and Services for the Aging cited Mr. Harrison as the Volunteer of the Year" for his contributions to the facility, such as helping with the mail and judging baking contests.

When Ms. Doeppenschmidt learned that Mr. Harrison had worn out the borrowed power wheelchair, she called The SCOOTER Store for help. She says that Eden Home has a good relationship with The SCOOTER Store because they are local and provide excellent service." The SCOOTER Store quickly qualified Mr. Harrison for a chair under the Gift of Mobility program.

Doug Harrison and his wife, Susanna, started the Gift of Mobility program in December 2002 to help people like David Harrison improve their quality of life by recovering their independence and mobility. Since then, the outreach program has worked with community service organizations to donate power wheelchairs, scooters and manual wheelchairs valued at more than $200,000 a year. The donations enable people living with disabilities to enjoy more freedom and independence.
